At the April 24 Alexandria City Council meeting, the Honorable Mayor, members of City Council and the Commission for the Arts will present three 2012 Alex Arts Awards. The presentation will be made in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 301 King Street at 7 pm. The annual Alex Arts Awards, presented by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, recognize Alexandria citizens or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to Alexandria’s vibrant arts community and cultural life.
The 2012 Alex Arts Award winners are the Ulysses S. James, Music Director, Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, the Little Theatre of Alexandria and Leah Valtin-Erwin, Senior, TC Williams High School.

The City of Alexandria will host the 19th Annual Alexandria Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Dr., on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s theme is “Eco-City Alexandria” highlighted by the 2nd Annual Trashion Fashion Show which will feature students from the Alexandria City Public Schools showing their upcycling creations by modeling fashions created by them from recycled materials; as well as songs and art. The show will take place throughout the event.
Earth Day features City agencies and organizations dedicated to protecting public health and the environment. Explore a new hybrid Trolley or DASH bus and other green vehicles. Exhibitors will provide environmental educational activities for the whole family which invoke the spirit of Earth Day. Additional activities include the Annual Earth Day Tree Sale; The Green Building Resource Center Tent featuring green building learning sessions; live animal exhibits; a celebration of Nature Poetry by the City Poet Laureate, Amy Young; live music by the T. C. Williams High School Jazz Band; the Fourth Annual Ellen Pickering Award presentation and the Arbor Day tree planting. Admission is free, food and beverages will be for sale.
