There won’t be quite as many cicadas this year as in the infamous Brood X 17-year cicadas of 2004, but a sizable population of Brood II 17-year cicadas will rise from the ground this spring.

Cicadas are common in the mid-Atlantic region and some come out every spring and summer—but this year, local residents will definitely see more than any year since the spring and summer of 2004.

The Brood II cicadas will emerge probably in mid- to late May from North Carolina to New England. Brood II last emerged in 1996 in our area.

“I think by Memorial Day it’s just going to be spectacular,” University of Maryland entomologist Michael Raupp told WTOP recently. “There will simply be millions of these things in the tree tops, and the boys are going to be singing their hearts out.”

We’ve all been taught if you see something, say something. But Metro riders contacted the News4 I-Team saying no one responded when they called for help.

Brawls, robberies even an unconscious passenger. Real emergencies do happen sometimes on Metro trains. But some riders say when they pushed the red emergency buttons located on railcars, no one answered.

The Board of Directors of the Alexandria Transit Company (ATC) will hold a public hearing in the Sister Cities Conference Room 1101, City Hall, Alexandria, Virginia, on March 28, 2013, at 5:30 p.m.

The following proposed fare and service changes have been identified in response to a potential fiscal year 2014 City budget shortfall that could affect DASH local transit subsidies. The Alexandria City Council adoption of the fiscal year 2014 budget on May 6, could impact the level of fare and service changes anticipated to take effect July 2013:

• A 10¢ increase in the base fare to $1.60. A $5.00 increase in the cost of the monthly DASH Pass to $40.
• King Street Trolley – Service frequency will be reduced from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes year round.
• AT1 – Peak period extension between Van Dorn and Eisenhower Metrorail Stations will be discontinued. Saturday extension between Eisenhower Avenue and King Street Metrorail Stations, via Carlyle, will be discontinued.
• AT2 – Saturday service frequency will be reduced from every 45 minutes to every 60 minutes.

The ATC Board of Directors is proposing the following service improvements based on funding identified in the City Manager’s proposed fiscal year 2014 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP):

• AT8 – Weekday peak period service frequency increased to every 10 minutes between Landmark Mall and the King Street Metrorail Station. Weekday midday service frequencies expanded to provide 30 minute frequencies along the entire route.
• AT9 – New weekday crosstown route connecting Mark Center, Southern Towers, NVCC, Bradlee Shopping Center, Parkfairfax, Shirlington Transit Center, Arlandria, Glebe Road, and Potomac Yard.
• AT10 – Weekday service to end approximately an hour later and Saturday service to start approximately an hour earlier and end an hour later.

Runners around the world are poised for the public opening of 30,000 entries for “The People’s Marathon,” which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27 in Arlington, VA, and throughout the nation’s capital.

The City of Alexandria is under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon today. For example, the Charo contains “Semi-sweet chocolate swirled with caramel and topped with whipped cream & Ghiradelli Caramel Sauce,” while the Liz Taylor includes “semi-sweet chocolate infused with lavender.” Each diva is available in milkshake or hot chocolate form. Looking for a recommendation? The Lana Turner milkshake is a great choice. As somebody who normally shies away from white chocolate, I had to give in to its white chocolate and blueberry goodness.

The diva attitude can be found throughout the rest of the store as well. Photos of select divas line the walls and tables, and even the other miscellaneous treats and trinkets available for purchase show off their sassy sides, such as one chocolate bar that tells everyone: “My Thoughts on Cooking: Get Rich and hire Someone.” Words to live by.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region, will conduct exercise Falcon Virgo 13-06 beginning Tuesday night, Mar. 13, between midnight and 2 a.m. (EDT), in the National Capital Region, Washington, D.C.

The exercise is comprised of a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Coordination Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and CONR’s Eastern Air Defense Sector.

Exercise Falcon Virgo is designed to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations as well as operationally test the NCR Visual Warning System and certify newly assigned command and control personnel at JADOC. Civil Air Patrol aircraft and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter will participate in the exercise.

These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure CONR’s rapid response capability. NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

As the Continental United States geographical component of the bi-national command NORAD, CONR provides airspace surveillance and control, and directs air sovereignty activities for the CONUS region. CONR and its assigned Air Force and Army assets throughout the country ensure air safety and security against potential air threats
